Rest dear Mother beside thy son
Mary and her husband were both baptized as young adults by her second
cousin, the Rev. Jack Lumpkin, who was a brother of Gov. Wilson
Lumpkin. Their grandfathers were brothers. In her husband's eulogy,
it is mentioned that she belonged to a most renowned family, and was a
true helpmeet indeed. Her death was eulogized in The Christian Index
on Feb. 9, 1888, stating in part, "That by the beautiful consistency
of her Christian life, she had gained our entire love and esteem."
"As a preacher's wife she met the full measure of duty, and now that
she is laid away in the silent grave, it may truthfully be said of her
what Jesus said of Mary when she had poured the ointment on His head:
'She hath done what she could.'" She was carried to her grave at
County Line Church by a large concourse of relatives and friends who
were ready to bear testimony to the piety and worth of this aged and
devoted disciple of the Lord Jesus
